Main themes
Alternating with LGLOR1514, this course deals with the following themes :
- Chronological approach to the material cultures of Egypt and the Ancient Near East (archaeology, art history, architecture)
- Presentation of the major artistic and architectural movements in direct relation to their geographical, socio-political and historical context within the development of the civilisations to which they belong
- Analysis of artefacts and works of art from different perspectives (stylistic, image interpretation, socio-cultural, political)
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| 1 | To master a fundamental knowledge base based on a chronology common to the various disciplines taught (archaeology, history, art history), with the aim to reinforce the general culture needed to follow the specialised courses offered by the Faculty |
| 2 | Master a basic knowledge of the major historical periods of the civilisations of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East, as well as their artistic and stylistic trends |
| 3 | Understand and apply the concepts, methods and analytical practices specific to the study of art history and archaeology |
| 4 | Understand the specific features and possible difficulties specific to the archaeology of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East (climate, conservation conditions, political climate) |
| 5 | Identify and analyse a selection of artefacts and artistic and architectural works that are significant of the civilisations covered |
| 6 | Know how to situate them within stylistic trends and historical periods in order to obtain a chronological framework covering the history of forms and themes |
| 7 | Situate the work/artifact in its spatial and geographical context |
| 8 | Develop a critical approach to the function, presentation, conservation (in a museum context) and reception of works and artefacts from the regions concerned |
| 9 | Develop a critical reflection on the history of the discipline and its current issues |
Content
This course is divided into two parts, one devoted to the Ancient Near East and the other to Ancient Egypt.
After a general introduction to archaeological excavation, survey and dating techniques, the course gives a brief overview of the history of the discipline. The specific features and possible difficulties of archaeological practice in Egypt and the Ancient Near East are then discussed. The remainder of the course is devoted to a diachronic study of the material culture of Ancient Egypt and the Ancient Near East, and of the major stylistic trends visible in royal and private art (painting, relief, statuary) and architecture, viewed in their historical and political context.
For the Egypt section, particular emphasis is placed on :

- The reception of Egyptian art
- Current issues and prospects for the discipline
- Specific features of archaeological practice in Egypt
- The importance of prehistory in the formation of the material culture of the Ancient Near East
- Certain major sites in the Ancient Near East (e.g. Göbekli Tepe, Uruk, etc.)
- Diachronic developments in the art of the Ancient Near East
- Specific features of archaeological practice in the Near East
