Prerequisites
General training in biology corresponding to registration for at least 120 credits of the bachelor's degree in biology
Main themes
The topics studied deal with biology in the broad sense and differ from one student to the other. Similarly to the finalities of the master degree studies accessible after the bachelor degree in biology, the practical training can be carried out in the field of research (public or private research institute, another university, research center belonging to a zoo, a NGO, a company, etc.), in a professional area (services, production or development in a company, a NGO, a ministry, etc.) or in the pedagogic field or more broadly the field of scientific popularization and communication (high school education, journalism, publishing company, coaching of nature discovery training, society active in the field of scientific communication, etc.).
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 This training consists of an awareness and careful observation of the biologist's professional activities and, if possible, active participation in these activities.  The aim is to acquire knowledge in the field covered by the placement and to develop the student's people skills, initiative, ability to adapt to circumstances and sense of organisation and observation. It should awake the curiosity about future courses and develop motivation for studies and the profession. It can help the student to decide on an orientation for the master's years.

Content
The practical training takes place in Belgium or abroad at the earliest during the summer holiday that follows the second year of bachelor studies in biology and at the latest at the end of the third year of bachelor studies. It takes place outside the periods where other teaching activities are organized. Its duration is of two weeks (a minimum of ten days of effective presence). The practical training is under the academic responsibility of one or more "training directors" members of the Biology Department. On the location of the practical training, the student is coached by a "training coach". An information session is organized at the beginning of the second year of bachelor studies and the students receive a "trainee guidebook" with all the practical informations about the practical training and its evaluation.
Evaluation methods
The evaluation is carried out by one or more course directors. A director ensures that the placement has been carried out according to the planned arrangements. The assessment is based on a set of themes communicated to the students in the trainee's guide. The mark is given for both the execution and the report of the placement.  In case of an insufficient mark, the student may be asked to write a new version of the report or to do a new placement.
Other information
LBIO1312 Internship normally takes place during the year in which a student completes his/her bachelor's degree, but it can also take place during the summer holidays following the second year of the bachelor's degree if the student has been enrolled in at least 120 of the 180 bachelor's degree credits, not including the 4 credits of LBIO1312.
