Prerequisites
The LBIR1130 course and its abridged version LBIR1130A are courses of general scientific culture accessible to all students having completed the secondary school level. They can be taken without any prerequisites by any UCLouvain student.
Main themes
The course provides a first introduction to Earth sciences from a geological perspective.
The following topics are covered:
- Planet Earth: formation and internal structure
- Earth functioning: plate tectonics
- Earth materials: minerals, rocks, the rock cycle, soils
- Tectonic activity: volcanism, earthquakes, mountain formation
- Deep time: fossils, the geological time scale
- Earth resources: energy and mineral resources
- Processes at the Earth's surface: mass movements, ocean circulation, glaciers
- Global change within the Earth System: the planetary boundaries
