Exploration of the ecological and environmental implications for the communication industries. The involvement of guest speakers on these topics may be included.
For COMU11BA first-year students only:
UAA 4: Practical Exercises in Guided Reading
The practical exercises (PE) are designed to support students in the reading and analysis of scientific texts on the theme of transitions in the field of information and communication sciences (ICS).
Teaching methods
The teaching approach will alternate between theoretical presentations on the challenges of transitions (digital and environmental) and case studies of communication situations. Some parts of the course may involve independent work, through additional readings or listening to specific podcasts.
For practical exercises (COMU11BA, first year only): sessions are organized in a flipped-classroom format, where students are required to prepare chapters from books or key articles, which will then be discussed during the session. The texts covered may vary, allowing for some flexibility in the topics discussed.
Evaluation methods
For the course: written exam.
For practical exercises (COMU11BA, first year only): assessment is continuous and based on several components detailed on the course Moodle.
For COMU11BA students (first year): the exam accounts for 60% of the final grade, and practical exercises account for 40%.
For other students and the resit session: 100% of the grade is based on the exam.
Other information
Within this course, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is regulated in accordance with the guidelines of the IA Smart Teaching note: https://oer.uclouvain.be/jspui/handle/20.500.12279/1007
The following principles must be respected:
  • Transparency: If you use an AI tool to assist in writing, research, or organizing your ideas, you must explicitly mention it in your work. This includes language correction, translation, creating an outline, or text summarization.
  • Authenticity: Submitted work must reflect your personal understanding and skills. AI use must not conceal or replace your own intellectual and critical effort.
  • Responsibility: You are fully responsible for the content submitted, even if AI tools have been used. Any unreferenced or abusive use may be considered an irregularity and will be sanctioned according to the study and examination regulations (notably Chapter 4, Section 7 of the RGEE).
  • Retention: Dialogues and interactions with AI tools used to produce content must be preserved and available for verification until the results are officially announced.
Furthermore, in the interest of energy and ecological efficiency, interactions with generative AI should be limited to what is strictly necessary for the task, and are strictly prohibited when a task explicitly or implicitly forbids their use (e.g., when the expected output is personal), unless prior authorization has been granted.
Online resources
Course materials, podcasts, articles, and required readings will be available on the course Moodle platform.
