Content
This course aims to provide an understanding of the main theories of narrative analysis and to apply them to the study of media narratives. The course will also offer a critical perspective on the storytelling of various contemporary public issues.
Teaching methods
The teaching method is project-based learning, supported by theoretical presentations delivered by the instructor (in person if health conditions allow) and course materials provided to students (PPTs, a textbook, and articles). The course will be divided into different modules, each designed to present various narratological tools useful for analyzing media narratives. Q&A sessions will also be conducted, as well as sessions for students to present their work.
For each module, the instructor will provide a theoretical presentation. Students will be expected to complete various practical assignments applying these tools throughout the semester.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment. Students will work in groups to complete various intermediate practical assignments during the semester (40% of the final grade), as well as a final group project (60% of the final grade). These assignments will involve the analysis of recent media narratives.
For the second session: In case of failure, students will be required to individually complete any assignments they did not pass.
Note: The use of artificial intelligence during assessments in this course is regulated by the rules outlined in the faculty notice on this topic, which is available on the faculty intranet for students.

Within this course, the use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools is regulated according to the guidelines of the IA Smart Teaching Note: https://oer.uclouvain.be/jspui/handle/20.500.12279/1007
The following principles must be respected:
  • Transparency: If you use an AI tool to assist with writing, research, or organizing your ideas, you must explicitly acknowledge it in your work. This includes language correction, translation, creating an outline, or summarizing a text.
  • Authenticity: Submitted work must reflect your personal understanding and skills. The use of AI must not conceal or replace your intellectual and critical effort.
  • Responsibility: You are fully responsible for the content you submit, even if AI tools were used. Any unreferenced or abusive use may be considered a breach and will be sanctioned in accordance with the regulations on studies and examinations (notably Chapter 4, Section 7 of the RGEE).
  • Record Keeping: Dialogues and interactions with AI tools used to produce content must be retained and made available for verification until results are officially announced.
Furthermore, in the interest of energy and environmental efficiency, interactions with generative AI should be limited to what is strictly necessary for the task, and are strictly prohibited when a task explicitly forbids it or implicitly requires personal work, unless prior authorization is obtained.
Online resources
Various resources related to media narratives will be made available on Moodle, including press articles for analysis, text excerpts, and chapters from reference books. These are supplemented by PowerPoint presentations corresponding to the sessions.
