Main themes
The aim of this course is to encourage students to develop a critical perspective on the complex relationships between ethics, law and political institutions in our contemporary liberal societies. It aims to introduce students to the methodology and concepts of ethics applied to law.
The course aims to enable students to understand the main ethical theories that are explicitly or implicitly referred to in contemporary legal debates. The aim is to provide students with the fundamental tools of ethical investigation that will enable them to develop independent thinking about norms and values. To this end, the course will focus on the analysis of concrete cases drawn from case law and/or legislation in various fields of law. This practical approach should enable students to deepen their understanding and mastery of the tools, concepts and theories of ethics applied to law.
The practical cases covered in the course will focus in particular on the ethics of climate change, animal ethics, civil disobedience, and the ethics of AI and recommendation algorithms.

Teaching methods
The method adopted for this course includes lectures and flipped classroom sessions. Lectures are supplemented by interactive activities with students (quizzes, debates, group discussions, etc.) to introduce them to ethical reasoning on controversial issues in various areas of law. The flipped classroom sessions aim to encourage students to actively participate in class discussions based on videos and readings to be completed before the session. Links to these resources can be found on Moodle.
Evaluation methods
Assessment will be based on a written examination, consisting of a multiple-choice section and an open-ended section. The examination will cover the content covered in the course sessions and the compulsory videos and readings. Course materials may take the form of slides or texts.
