Prerequisites
The student has successfully completed the introductory course in literary studies and the literature courses in the target language of the first year.
Main themes
This course aims to introduce students to a broad range of theories and methods that are relevant to the critical analysis of literary texts. More specifically, the course will :
- introduce the ideas and concepts of the most important theoretical and critical approaches;
- train students to apply these ideas to particular case studies and to explain how different approaches lead to distinct types of questions and answers ;
- provide a historical overview of the development of literary theory and criticism, with special attention to developments in the Anglo-American tradition;
- equip students with the necessary skills to read classic texts from the field of literary theory as well as to understand how research in literary studies fits into particular traditions and research programmes.
