The course unit introduces students to different branches of English linguistics. It deals with various elements that constitute the foundation of English speech and writing and its use in context, including:
- The history and development of English: origin of the language, evolution, diversification
- The sounds of English: consonants, vowels, diphthongs, allophones; word stress; intonation
- The structure and meaning of English words: morphemes, morphs, allomorphs; inflection and derivation; word formation processes; neologisms
- The discourse of English: descriptive and critical discourse analysis; ecolinguistics
