  • The fundamentals of political science (the, the, politics, power, authority, the state, structures of government, political regimes, electoral systems, political ideologies),
  • The main theories and concepts of public policy analysis relevant to examining sports policies,
  • Sport development policies: elite sport and sport for all,
  • Development through sport policies and other local/regional/national sports policies (doping, betting, sponsorship, town planning, health, professional sport, inclusion, etc.),
  • The main theoretical tools developed in comparative politics
  • Comparison of the structure of the sports landscape (role of government, sports agencies and other sports organisations) and of national sports policies in several European and international states.
  • Sportwashing, soft power and geopolitical issues
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

  • Explain the concepts of politics and public policy in the context of sport 1.1, 1.2)
  • Identify and analyse key current public policy issues in sport 1.1, 1.2, 1.5)
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the social, sporting, cultural and economic influence of sports policies on society 1.1, 1.2, 1.5)
  • Explain the main theoretical perspectives for analysing sports policies 1.1, 1.2, 1.5)
  • Explain, analyse and compare the structure and influence of the national sports landscape and sports policies in different contexts using relevant resources and analytical tools (1.1,1.5, 4.3, 4.4, 5.1,5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 6.1, 6.2, 6.3., 6.4. 6.4., 7.2., 7.3)
  • Working in a team (5.3, 5.4 5.4, 7.1, 7.4)
