Prerequisites
- For level 1, no prerequisites; some knowledge of Latin and/or Greek is useful, but not required.
- For level 2, the course LGLOR1654 (level 1).
Main themes
Introduction to the structures and main characteristics of the ancient Armenian and Georgian languages.
Alternating with LGLOR1654, this course is given to two distinct groups of students, according to their level. As a general rule, the first term is devoted to Armenian and the second to Georgian.
- At level 1 (beginners), the course begins with the writing and reading of the two alphabets in question (Armenian and Georgian), followed by basic notions of morphology and syntax.
- At level 2 (intermediates), the notions of morphology and syntax are deepened and supplemented by the study of extracts from original texts.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| 1 | read and pronounce Ancient Armenian and Old Georgian; |
| 2 | demonstrate, for these two languages, a knowledge of the basic lexicon and the main concepts of nominal morphology (declensions) and verbal morphology (conjugations); |
| 3 | use basic tools to translate Old Armenian and Georgian texts of simple or medium difficulty; |
| 4 | analyse and explain the forms found in these texts. |
Content
Introduction to the ancient Armenian language and to the ancient Georgian language. For each language:
- Acquisition of the alphabet (reading and writing);
- Main elements of grammar (morphology and syntax);
- Commented reading of simple texts;
- Presentation of the main tools (grammars, dictionaries, digital resources).
Teaching methods
The instructor presents the elements of grammar (morphology and syntax), which are then immediately applied in sentences and texts that the students are asked to read and analyse with the instructor's help. The course include homework exercises that are corrected during class time.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment through the reading and analysis exercises in class, complemented by an oral examination focusing on the texts read during the course.
- Continuous assessment accounts for half of the final mark, and the oral examination for the other half. A partial examination (worth 50% of the end-of-year mark) is organised at the end of the first term, covering the language studied during that term.
- Passing the course is conditional upon passing the oral examination. If the continuous assessment is failed, it will be replaced in the second session by a written test.
Other information
The teacher will meet with the students at the beginning of the term to set the schedule. As a rule, Armenian is taught in the first term and Georgian in the second.
Online resources
The course materials, bibliography and other useful resources are available on the Moodle page of the course.
