Main themes

This course plans to:
  1. provide an overview of the different Greek dialects and to go into greater depth on selected aspects;
  2. reading and commenting on significant extracts from pre-classical texts.
Content
Study of non-Attic Greek dialects through the reading of texts. Students will be introduced to the Ionian (Herodotus), Aeolian (Sappho and Alceaeus), Dorian (Alcman) and Boeotian (Corinne) dialects, as well as to dialects attested in inscriptions. The course will also provide an introduction to the Mycenaean dialect of the Linear B inscriptions of the 2nd millennium BC.
Teaching methods
Lectures (which may be combined with presentations by the students).
Evaluation methods
A. Regular tests during practical work sessions (20 % of the final grade). In the event of failure, the student is required to sit a complementary test (translation from Greek into French) during the September session.
B. Oral presentation in class (20 % of the final grade). In the event of failure, a written paper due before the beginning of the September session.
C. Written examination assessing theoretical knowledge (30 % of the final grade) in June. In the event of failure, the student must retake the exam in September.
D. Oral examination assessing the mastery of cursive reading (30 % of the final grade). In the event of failure, the student must retake the examination in September.

Generative AI must be used responsibly, respecting academic and scientific integrity. Since scientific integrity requires referencing one's sources, the use of an AI must always be indicated. The use of AI for tasks for which they are explicitly forbidden will be considered cheating.
Successful completion of all four parts is essential to demonstrate the skills and knowledge defined in the learning outcomes of the teaching unit. A failing grade in any of the four parts results in a failing grade for the entire unit.
