Prerequisites
The course is intended for students with a good knowledge of Arabic.
Main themes
The course covers the following topics:
  1. Concepts of codicology;
  2. Presentation of the issues involved in the copying and transmission of Arabic texts;
  3. Presentation of different medieval and modern Arabic scripts;
  4. Practical initiation to the reading of Arabic manuscripts (reading exercises);
  5. Introduction to the methods of editing Arabic texts (theoretical and practical aspects).
Content
The seminar focuses on palaeography and codicology of manuscripts in Arabic script and methods of critical edition and textual criticism for texts in Arabic.
The seminar is primarily practical: the student will learn to read medieval and modern manuscripts in Arabic script, to identify elements relevant for the history of the copy, and to edit a medieval text in Arabic critically.
Each part of the course will consist of two phases: (1) theoretical lectures; (2) practical exercices.
Teaching methods
Activities outside the class: individual exercices; personal research to acquire and/or increase the student's familiarity with the tools and resources relevant to the course; final written assignment to be submitted before the oral exam
Activities in class: ex cathedra course; discussion on individual exercices prepared beforehead by students; collective hands on practical training
Evaluation methods
Participation in class, including effective and on time preparation of individual exercices before each session; oral examination on the theoretical and practical aspects of the seminar and on a final written assignment.

The documents used for the practical sessions will be available on the Moodle platform.
