Content
The course is structured in two volumes or parts:
  • Volume 1, ‘lecture course’, given by Mauricio Narváez.
  • Volume 2, ‘practical course’, taught by Paloma Riera.
However, this distinction is not very strict: the lecture course also includes exercises and the practical course includes theoretical aspects. We will approach culture through language and language through culture. With this dynamic, the course offers:
  1. Volume 1: study of the most significant events in the history (especially modern and contemporary) of Spain and Hispanic Latin America in the fields of politics, thought, society, science, literature, art, language and translation. It will also seek to further develop written comprehension and expression skills. It will provide tools to promote self-learning in the skills and content covered in this part. The entire course will be constantly linked to translation.
  2. Volume 2: based on current events in Spain and Latin America, the course will focus on developing oral expression, comprehension and interaction skills. It will emphasise lexical and phraseological aspects in the fields of geography, politics, economics, the environment, population, employment, health, education, sport, etc., and the resolution of situations in translation and/or interpreting practice. It will provide tools to promote self-learning in the skills covered in this part.
Teaching methods
  1. The lecture will favour a flipped classroom approach (participants will have readings and exercises to complete before each class session, which will focus on this preparatory work); it will also offer different types of writing exercises (descriptive, narrative, argumentative) as well as text interpretation and translation analysis.
  2. The practical course will also favour a flipped classroom approach and will include a variety of comprehension, expression and language interaction exercises focused on translation and interpretation and related to the Hispanic topics covered.
  3. Both volumes (1 and 2) will make extensive use of the Moodle platform (a communication channel between students and teachers) for submitting documents, sharing URL links, handing in assignments, providing information, participating in forums, etc.
Teams will be the communication platform when the Covid situation (or other circumstances) requires classes to be held online. In this situation, a co-modal course format may be considered if logistical conditions allow.
Evaluation methods
The final mark will consist of two integrated parts (Part 1: Mauricio Narváez, Part 2: Paloma Riera). Successful completion of both parts is essential to demonstrate the skills and knowledge defined in the learning outcomes for the teaching unit. A fail mark for either part will result in a fail mark for the entire teaching unit. If the final mark is less than 10/20, only the part(s) failed during the June session will be retaken during the August/September session. In the event of unjustified absence from one of the parts, both parts of the teaching unit must be retaken during the August/September session. If the EU is not validated at the end of one year, both parts must be taken the following year.
The assessment mark will be composed as follows:
  • Volume 1, the lecture course comprises 20% for continuous assessment and 80% for the final examination, which will be written.
  • Volume 2, the practical course comprises 30% for continuous assessment (this includes a series of exercises and one or two tests that will take place during class hours) and 70% for the final examination, which will be organised in two parts, one devoted to listening comprehension and a second, in individual interview, devoted to oral expression and interaction. This interview will be based on an activity book compiled throughout the term. Details of this will be provided on the Moodle platform.
The examinations for both volumes will be conducted in person or, if the epidemiological situation requires it, online via Teams.
For the September session:
  • for the lecture course, there will be a written examination which will constitute 100% of the final mark; continuous assessment will no longer be taken into account;
  • for the practical course, the examination will be the same as in June (it will constitute 100% of the final mark), continuous assessment will no longer be taken into account. Instructions for the activity book for this session will be provided on the Moodle platform.
All exams will be held in person or, if the epidemiological situation requires it, online via Teams.

  • The assessments and assignments to be presented or submitted as part of the course are personal work that will reflect the student's skills in ‘Lengua y cultura aplicadas a la Traducción e Interpretación- Español’ . The use of artificial intelligence is prohibited. Sources used must be properly cited. Any irregularities will be penalised in accordance with the general regulations for studies and examinations.

Audiovisual and textual material will be offered to students progressively throughout the course.
