Content
The course is organized around three key concepts in clinical psychoanalysis: remembering, repetition, and working through.
In the first part, focusing on the theme of remembering, the foundations of the clinical psychoanalytic approach and the resulting model of the psychic apparatus will be presented and illustrated with clinical vignettes. Key concepts: the unconscious and its formations (slips of the tongue, dreams, and symptoms), the Symbolic and the Imaginary.
In the second part, focusing on repetition, the advent of subjectivity in relation to the Other and the construction of a fundamental fantasy will be developed. Key concepts: the split subject and the divided Other, object a, fantasy, sexuality and drive, psychological trauma, and thr Real.
In the third part, organized around the theme of working through, the principles of psychoanalytic clinical practice and its various fields of application will be addressed. Key concepts: transference, interpretation, and the aim of treatment.
Teaching methods
Lecture (in French) supported by a series of slides, recordings of therapists in action or film excerpts to illustrate the theory, and clinical vignettes.
The teacher draws on reference texts, which are discussed during class and gradually become available on the course's Moodle site. Students are encouraged to read and discuss the texts in small reading groups.
Online Module: A series of video clips (in French) to train psychoanalytic reasoning skills. An equivalent reading in English is available.
Evaluation methods
In this course, students are assessed in two ways:
  • An oral exam during the exam session covering all the material covered in the course (90% of the final grade)
  • A written assignment (10% of the final grade): Students are required to acquire clinical reasoning skills by watching a series of video clips available on Moodle. This skill must be applied to a formation of the unconscious (slip of the tongue or dream).
The assessment procedures are identical in the first and second sessions.
Other information
It is helpful to have completed an introduction to psychoanalysis, clinical psychology, and/or psychopathology (e.g., LPSP1201 Clinical Psychology, LPSP1202 General Psychopathology, LPSP1325 Fundamental Questions in Clinical Psychology).

  • The essential texts/documents (or equivalent texts) for the course are available in an English version.
  • Students will have the option to take the exam in English.
  • The course requires written work in French. However, students may submit this work in English.
