Content
Discourses, whether ordinary or specialized, spoken or written, constitute a fundamental component of the social sphere. They fulfill multiple functions within it and, as such, represent privileged—indeed, almost indispensable—materials for sociological inquiry. The central issue addressed in this course is the set of methods suitable for their analysis. Depending on the research objectives pursued, different methods may prove relevant. Within the framework of this course, after an overview of the possible approaches, particular emphasis is placed on providing students with the epistemological foundations and technical principles of one specific method: structural content analysis
Teaching methods
The method is introduced by the professor during the first sessions of the course. The majority of subsequent sessions are devoted to training students in discourse analysis techniques. Students are expected to engage in hands-on work and to participate actively in class.
Evaluation methods
Students are assessed through two components:
- A written paper, to be defended orally during the examination session (60%)
- The completion of exercises both between and during class sessions (40%)
Other information
The use of artificial intelligence during the assessment activities of this course is governed by the rules set out in the faculty note on this matter, available on the faculty intranet in the information section for students
