Content
The course aims to convey basic knowledge about political communication. It seeks to link developments in political communication practices with the scientific work that analyses them.
Although campaign periods are key moments for analysis, the course is not limited to them. It adopts a relational approach to political communication, highlighting the chains of interdependence that condition the fabric of political communication and its circulation. It thus explores the emergence and professionalisation of communication in the political sphere, focusing not only on individuals and the institutions in which they operate, but also on practices, tasks and tools. Finally, it shows the circulation of knowledge and practices between different fields (commercial/non-commercial, institutional, political, entrepreneurial, etc.).
The empirical dimension of the course will focus on European institutions, but will not be limited to them.
Teaching methods
The teaching programme includes a lecture component that aims to provide and discuss the notions and concepts necessary for understanding and analysing political communication, illustrated with examples. It also relies on the active participation of students, particularly through presentations of readings, again illustrated with examples.
The course requires active and continuous monitoring of political current affairs (particularly in Europe).
