Content
THEO2331 - Eastern Theology - Christophe D'Aloisio
The first part of the course provides an introduction to Eastern Christian traditions, focusing primarily on the Orthodox Church in its traditional sense, as well as the non-Chalcedonian and non-Ephesian Orthodox Churches and the Catholic Churches of the Eastern rite. The second part of the course critically analyses the theological work of one or more authors representative of Orthodoxy.
The overview section is organised into interdisciplinary modules, drawing on theological, historical, sociological, socio-anthropological, literary and political approaches. This enables students to understand Eastern theologies in their historical context and in relation to contemporary issues.
The second part is divided into two sections: a general presentation of the work of one or more Orthodox theologians and an in-depth analysis of selected excerpts from their writings.
The overall aim of the course is not to provide students with encyclopaedic knowledge of such a vast field, but rather to enable them to identify and use the relevant research tools in this area in practical situations.
