| Contribution of teaching unit to learning outcomes assigned to programme This unit contributes to the acquisition and development of the following learning outcomes, as assigned to the Master's degree in translation : 2.3, 2.4, 2.8 4.5 7.1, 7.3 AA-FS-TA. Develop expertise and a high level of competence in the field of adapting audio-visual material into French, from two foreign languages, with a view to participating successfully in the professional multilingual audio-visual sector. Specific learning outcomes on completion of teaching unit On completing this unit the student is able to: · Demonstrate his or her knowledge and command of the norms governing interlingual subtitling and their development; · Utilize professional subtitling software; · Analyse existing productions using a scientifically-based approach. |

Content
The course will analyse the main AVT modalities: subtitling, surtitling, dubbing, voice-over, subtitling for the deaf and hard of hearing (SDH), and audio description. The theoretical component will introduce key concepts (multimodality, source and target texts, translation problems and solutions), the history and typology of AVT practices, as well as national and international formatting conventions. Students will also study practical challenges such as rendering cultural references, humour and language varieties. Recent research and developments will be addressed, including creative subtitling, templates, machine translation and post-editing, cloud-based tools, and the impact of technologies on workflows and quality. The course will further explore the professional ecosystem of AVT (client relations, negotiation, project management, quality assurance) and ethical issues (cloud-based software, crowdsourcing, fansubbing, artificial intelligence). The practical component, mainly using EZTitles©, will allow students to train in spotting, time-cueing, creating and revising subtitles and audio descriptions. Outputs will be discussed and corrected by the instructor to ensure a direct link between theory and practice.

Evaluation methods
Students will receive personalised feedback throughout the semester as well as a final assessment consisting of a practical assignment and a test to validate theoretical knowledge. The assessment will be weighted 50% for the practical assignment and 50% for the theoretical test.
For the August/September resit session, an individual assignment will be required.
The use of generative AI is tolerated within this course. However, students must systematically indicate any sections produced with AI, in line with academic referencing standards.
