Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of plant biology applied to breeding (LVETE1111) and the biology of organisms (LBIO1112) is recommended.
Main themes
The main objectives are to
  • familiarise the student with the management, functioning and constraints of a production animal farm and to learn how to handle production animals, thanks to a 7-day immersion in an approved farm where breeding is the main activity. These non-clinical aspects mainly concern animal handling, safety and hygiene rules, the general organisation of a farm and the constraints linked to the physiological characteristics of the animals (reproduction, feeding, milking, etc.).
  • gain a better understanding of the profession of practising veterinarian by following a veterinarian for a week in his or her daily clinical practice ( domestic animals and/or production animals).
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1
  • To understand the functioning, constraints and challenges of a production animal farm (cattle, small ruminants, pigs or poultry).
  • To have a clear vision of the different aspects of the profession of practising veterinarian
  • To approach and handle domestic animals encountered during training courses

Content

For each 7-day placement, the student is required to find a training supervisor where he or she can work for approximately 8 hours a day (each placement must include a minimum of 56 hours of work).
An agreement will be signed between the farm manager or the approved veterinarian (= the training supervisor), UCLouvain (represented by one of the holders of the activity) and the trainee.  For each placement, the student must submit a written report describing the activities carried out (one page) and develop a scientific summary on one of the aspects related to the placement in a maximum of two pages.
Both placements will be carried out during holiday periods.
Teaching methods
A vade-mecum including all the information needed to choose the stays, the forms to fill in and the writing of the reports is available on Moodle.
Internship agreements must be drawn up and signed by all parties (student intern, internship supervisor and UCLouvain internship director or his/her representative).
Evaluation methods

For each placement, the student will write a one-page report describing the main activities carried out during the placement and a two-page report (excluding illustrations and references) on a scientific theme related to the placement.
The activity can only be evaluated if the two reports and the required forms are submitted by the begining of the examination session in which the student has registered for the activity.
The mark is based on the reports and the placement supervisor's assessment of the trainee (assessment form to be returned with the reports). The criteria for assessing the reports are available on Moodle.
Other information
This is a compulsory activity that can be carried out as long as the student has a PAE that includes a majority of block II courses. Placements may be spread over several academic years. No placement can be carried out until the agreement has been signed by all parties. To obtain a placement agreement, the student must be covered by UCLouvain insurance (conditions on Moodle).
