At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| On completing the Unit ‘Translation into A', students should be able to demonstrate their ability to: translate an unfamilar text (press article) into Italian applying the theory taught and avoiding lexical or syntactic calque; translate an unfamiliar text into correct French (in terms of grammar and vocabulary) drawing on the whole palette of options in their native language; transfer the message in French in line with the author's intentions, including in relation to the style and register of the original and avoiding calque errors; weigh up the appropriateness of possible equivalences, be duly circumspect and select the most appropriate option; use appropriate translation techniques in order to resolve any difficulties inherent in a source text and be aware of the nature and challenges of the translation process; check the meaning of words through intelligent use of monolingual and bilingual dictionaries. | |

For Fiorenzo Molino: Italian-to-French translation exercises based on historical comics and more recent graphic novels.
For Julien Bal: Italian-to-French translation exercises based on texts in a range of genres and registers, including press articles, horoscopes, advertising and promotional material, songs, and transcribed public statements. Introduction to literary translation through the analysis of published translations and the strategies they employ. Introduction to sight translation using aphorisms and short extracts from the online press. Comparison of different translations of the same text. Post-editing and comparative translation exercises using artificial intelligence.

Teaching methods
Text analysis and guided Italian-to-French translation exercises, both in class and as preparatory work. Students compare and discuss their translations in class, with particular attention to linguistic accuracy, style and translation choices.
Evaluation methods
To obtain the credits for this course unit, students must complete all components of the assessment.
Module 1: Written examination during the examination period. Students are asked to continue the translation of a literary text on the basis of an opening passage provided to them. They are expected to identify the translation principles used in the passage and apply them consistently. A basic glossary is provided. Bilingual and monolingual dictionaries are allowed.
The use of artificial intelligence is not permitted during the examination.
Module 2: In June, continuous assessment based on a series of tests for which attendance is compulsory. In September, assessment takes the form of an in-person examination.
A mark of 10/20 or above for one component will automatically be carried over to the resit period, provided that all components of the assessment have been completed. That component may not be retaken. Marks will not be carried over if a student was absent from, or received an attendance-only mark for, any component.
