Prerequisites

The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.
Content
The theoretical concepts covered in Part 1 will be used to analyse a real-world problem in the field of environmental science and bioengineering in general.
Teaching methods
Teaching is based on project-based learning, carried out in student groups.
Practical sessions are optional ‘coaching’ sessions during which students can seek assistance from teaching assistants and student tutors, who guide their work by moving from one group to another as questions arise.
A number of activities will also be set up on the course’s Moodle site, which will be used extensively. Students are expected to be highly proactive and to complete the compulsory activities by the deadlines.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment.
Part A: Presentation of the problem and key issues  – 20 per cent of the final mark (mark awarded by the lecturers)
Part B: Interim report on proposed solutions – 30% of the final mark, broken down as follows:
12% from peer assessment
18% from assessment by lecturers
Part C: Final poster and spreadsheets – 50% of the final mark (mark awarded by lecturers)
At the end of the term, a formative assessment of group dynamics adjusts students’ individual marks according to their relative level of involvement within their team. This final stage is clearly explained on the course’s Moodle site.
There is no exam in the June session.
In the event that a mark is not awarded following the June assessment, an individual exam will be offered in the August session.
Individual penalties will be imposed for late submission of deliverables or non-participation in compulsory activities; these will be described in detail during sessions and communicated via the course’s Moodle site. Should a student fail to participate in the project, the lecturer may propose to the examination board that the student be barred from sitting the examination for the teaching unit, in accordance with Article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations.
