The course will be structured around several linguistic topics relating to French and LSFB, including comparisons between the two languages. It is divided into two components: (1) a theoretical component taught by Nicolas Hanquet and (2) practical application of the theoretical concepts, taught by Chantal Gerday.
Students will study the following topics:

- Discourse markers in French and LSFB
- Information contrast (prosody) in French and LSFB
- Constructed action and reported discourse in French and LSFB
- Interaction in French and LSFB
- Enrichment and reduction in transfer between two languages
- Register shifts in interpreting between a signed language and a spoken language

Evaluation methods
Theoretical component of the course:
Theoretical component (70% of the overall course grade): a research assignment on a discourse in LSFB, involving annotation and analysis using ELAN, followed by a written report presenting the research. The assignment is presented during class (30% of the grade for this component), and the written report is submitted during the June examination period. In the event of failure or non-submission, the assignment must be submitted during the second examination period, either with the presentation grade carried over or with a presentation delivered during that examination period.
Practical component (30% of the overall course grade): written and/or video-based/practical examination.
Both components must be passed to obtain credit for the course unit.
Attendance at in-person sessions is compulsory. Under Article 73 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), unjustified absences may result in sanctions. The course coordinators may recommend that the examination board refuse registration for the January, June or August/September examination periods to any student who has attended fewer than 80% of classes.
