Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Dutch refresher course in order to reach level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.
The course examines the elements necessary to be able to understand a basic text, follow a basic conversation and be able to respond and react briefly in Dutch.
The courses will enable to:
- develop receptive skills through the reading of current articles on topics of everyday life and topics related to the chosen options;
- develop productive skills by building on elementary knowledge (grammar and vocabulary);
- to contextualize and use the vocabulary and grammar studied.

Content
The courses will be structured around:
1) Grammar: Review of basic grammar (mainly done at home, through exercises on Moodle);
2) Vocabulary: Current events and introduction to the specific vocabulary of the chosen options.
3) Hands-on exercises: Group work regarder several topics appearing in the syllabus, to be done partially in class, partially at home
4) Reading: Reading of the book *Niks* by Koen Gubbels (Amsterdam: Leeslicht/Eenvoudig communiceren, 2018, 88p.).
Teaching methods
In-person.
One hour of class per week.
This course requires regular and autonomous work outside of the class.
Evaluation methods
The course assessment is structured as follows:
- Q1: Written examination accounting for 40 per cent of the final mark
- Q2: Written examination accounting for 30 per cent of the final mark + oral examination (in the form of a group presentation) accounting for 30 per cent of the final mark
The Q1 written examination will take place outside the regular examination period during the first fortnight of December 2026. It will cover the material from the first four-month term and will consist of several written assignments on the topics covered in class.
Students who do not achieve at least half marks in December must retake this part in May.
The written examination for Q2 (and possibly Q1) will take place outside the main examination period during the first fortnight of May 2027. The Q2 exam will cover the Q2 syllabus in terms of vocabulary and content, and the entire year’s syllabus for grammar, as well as a section on the book *Niks*. The dates for the oral presentations will be announced in class during the first term. Although these are oral presentations in small groups, students will indeed be assessed individually. Therefore, not all members of the same group will necessarily receive the same mark.
(For Q1, see above)
At the end of the academic year, students will receive a mark for the whole year.
If a student does not achieve an average of 10/20 in June, they must retake the module(s) in August for which they did not achieve a mark of 10/20. Marks of 10/20 or above will be retained. Students will therefore not be able to retake a module for which they have achieved a mark of 10/20 or higher. If a student is required to retake the oral component in August, this will be done on an individual basis (rather than in a group, as in Q2).
A document setting out which part each student must retake in August in the event of a fail will be made available on Moodle after the results are published in June.
In case of absence during one of the different parts of the evaluation
1) The student will receive the grade 0A if they are absent without justification
2) The student will receive the grade 0M if they can justify their absence by means of a medical certificate, sent to the faculty administration within 24 hours
3) The student will receive the grade 0 if they ask for a grade of presence ("note de présence") online
No exceptions will be allowed.
Please note that students are required to follow all information and instructions posted on Moodle. Non-observance of instructions will result in failure with a 0 for the part(s) concerned.
Use of online tools :
If the student chooses to use one or more online tools (translators, artificial intelligence, spelling and grammar checking tools), he or she is required to systematically indicate all the parts that have been subject to this use, for example by indicating it in footnotes. The student must specify the purpose(s) for which the tool was used (information, writing, correction). They should also mention the name of the tool (ChatGPT, Deepl, Bing, Bard, Chatsonic, etc.) and the date of consultation. This information will be systematically cited according to the bibliographic references stipulated by the teachers. However, students remain responsible for the content of their work, regardless of the sources used.
In order to ensure that the student's work is personal, criteria such as originality, critical spirit, creativity and illustration with examples (e.g. from his/her own experience) will be taken into account.
Any behaviour on the part of the student which prevents or attempts to prevent, in whole or in part, the correct assessment of his/her knowledge, skills and/or competences will be considered an irregularity and may result in sanctions.
Other information
All contact with the teachers must be done via email ! Messages sent via Moodle will not be taken into consideration.
Students are required to state a clear email object and to always mention their full name, their studies (POLS) and their group.
Online resources
In addition to the syllabus and other documents handed out in class, Moodle is your main work tool. Student must visit the Moodle page of the course (Code: BNEER1183) at least once a week.
