Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

The aim of this course is to perfect the level of oral and written expression, it aims for an in depth comprehension and expression. It will develop the student’s analysis, discussion skills… as well as his ability to consult scientific sources in Spanish (literary criticism, linguistic references...).
It will bring the student to a greater autonomy and fluency in the targeted language.
It aims also to deepen the knowledge of Hispanic culture and diversity: we will focus on literature but also on the news, cinema, painting and history.
Throughout the course the student will aim for the C1-C2 level defined by the Common European Framework of Reference.

Content
To enhance students' language skills and promote autonomy in Spanish, this course focuses on the linguistic analysis of pragmatic phenomena in standard Spanish and on their study in the context of linguistic research on current issues and social debates relating to Hispanic culture and its diversity. This linguistic approach is complemented by revisions of grammatical, lexical, syntactic and morphosyntactic content related to the linguistic phenomena covered.

Through the methods and analyses undertaken, students will learn not only to analyse linguistic phenomena in Spanish, but also to write and present an academic paper in linguistics by compiling a corpus of linguistic data and consulting the academic literature on their chosen topics. Furthermore, students will become familiar with the use of Spanish-language corpora.
Teaching methods
This teaching unit is delivered in person and comprises two hours of teaching per week, focusing on the study and application of methods for analysing pragmatic phenomena in Spanish, as well as on revising grammatical, lexical, syntactic, and morphosyntactic content related to these phenomena. In addition, the course includes sessions devoted to an introduction to the scientific method and to the reading and discussion of scientific research (see the detailed timetable on Moodle).

The in-person classes require active participation from students. They must also be supplemented by daily independent study, including preparation of readings and exercises.

The course materials used during the sessions (PowerPoint presentations, exercises, etc.) are made available to students on Moodle. In addition, other materials (additional exercises and useful resources) can also be downloaded from this platform.
Evaluation methods
The final assessment consists of a mark awarded at the end of each term, broken down as follows:

Term 1: 40% of the final mark
This mark comprises three components:
  • Written examination covering the linguistic and language content from the first-term course - 40%
  • Research paper in linguistics - 30%
  • Oral examination on the research paper - 30%

Term 2: 60% of the final mark
This mark comprises two components:
  • Final written examination assessing all the skills and content from the second-term course – 40%
  • Scientific oral presentation, during Term 2, of a linguistic analysis focusing on one of the pragmatic phenomena covered in the second-term course - 60%

A timetable and a detailed description for the research paper and the scientific presentation will be published on Moodle.

If a student fails Term 1, they must retake the exam covering the Term 1 content during the June examination session.
During the August examination session, students must retake any components of the assessment that they did not pass during the academic year.

In accordance with Article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations (RGEE), the teacher may propose to the jury that a student who has not submitted their research paper within the required deadline, or who has not completed the required stages of the educational programme, be denied registration for the examination. In case of absence from an assessment, students must provide a medical certificate to the teacher within 48 hours of the assessment. In this case, the assessment will not be postponed or included in the final assessment. If a medical certificate is not provided, the students will be given a mark of 0 for the assessment in question.

Furthermore, for the writing of the research paper and any task that is subject to assessment, any use of generative AI, other than those explicitly authorised in the course instructions, is prohibited and will be considered cheating, under the terms of the RGEE. Where the use of generative AI is authorised, it must be used responsibly and in accordance with the principles of scientific integrity, and its use must be explicitly acknowledged.
