Prerequisites
Students must have level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) in English.
Main themes
The topics covered are selected in line with the learning outcomes of the programme and the communicative needs as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for the target level (A2).
They cover general and authentic communication situations relating to everyday life, social and cultural contexts, as well as university studies, such as short informal interactions with peers about familiar topics.
Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Learning outcomes (Bachelor's programme in Human and Social Sciences, Information and Communication, Sociology and Anthropology, Political Sciences)
  • LO4. Communicate and collaborate in French and two foreign languages, both orally and in writing, while adapting to the audience and context to integrate into an international environment.
    • LO4.2. For 2 foreign languages (English and Dutch, German, or Spanish):
      • Communicate orally and in writing in a clear, coherent, well-argued, and fluent manner on general topics or subjects related to the field of study.Identify differences and similarities between the target culture (associated with the language) and the culture of origin.
      • Use appropriate strategies to establish contact with speakers of the target culture.
    • LO4.4. Adopt an effective and respectful dialogue attitude by adjusting the communication mode according to the interlocutor (peers, teachers, administrative staff, socio-professional environment) and demonstrating listening skills, empathy, and assertiveness.

Listening Comprehension (A2)
  • Understand enough to meet concrete needs, provided speech is clearly articulated.
  • Understand the main points of clear standard speech or a familiar variety on familiar matters.
 
Reading Comprehension (A2)
  • Read straightforward factual texts on subjects related to their field and interests with a satisfactory level of comprehension.
 
Spoken Production (A2)
  • Read aloud, paying attention to intonation and pronunciation to be understood without the need for clarification.
  • Produce simple, connected speech on familiar topics, using basic sentence structures and simple connectors like "and," "but," and "because."
Spoken Interaction (A2)
  • Interact with reasonable ease in structured situations and short conversations, provided the other person helps if necessary.
  • Handle short social exchanges and everyday conversations without undue effort;
  • ask and answer questions, and exchange ideas and information on familiar topics in predictable everyday situations.
 
Written Production (A2)
  • Write short responses and texts on topics covered in class.
  • Paraphrase and rephrase source information.
  • Produce a series of simple phrases and sentences linked with simple connectors such as "and," "but," and "because" to express opinions.
 
General Linguistic Competence (A2)
Has a basic repertoire of language that enables them to deal with everyday situations of predictable content, although they will generally have to compromise on the message and search for words or signs.
  • In terms of grammar, can use simple structures correctly.
  • Pronunciation is generally clear enough to be understood, but interlocutors may occasionally need to ask for repetition. A strong influence from other spoken languages may affect comprehension and require cooperation from interlocutors. However, the pronunciation of familiar words is clear.
