Content
The course is an introduction to the archaeological campaigns, to the methods of archaeological survey as well as to the archaeological methods of excavation. The course successively considers the preliminary investigations, the documentary management, the use of aerial photographs and lidar techniques in topographic surveys. The methods of field survey on site or at the micro-regional or territorial scale, by coring and drilling, with the help of geophysics as well in open or wooden area, in subaquatic environment… are presented. The course also considers the organisation of research, excavation methods, the establishment of a topographical reference framework, the recording of data, the interpretation of results and the principles of preventive conservation. Particular environments or techniques will be addressed (confined environments, prehistoric excavation, built context, perishable materials, funerary sites, submerged environments, urban archaeology).
Teaching methods
The course includes theoretical teaching in an auditorium and/or at a distance added to a mandatory fieldwork of two weeks of excavation or survey work in the field (10 working days, excavations or field survey).
Evaluation methods
The assessment takes the form of a written examination in the first session (and a written or oral examination in the second session). Credits will only be awarded if a two-week excavation or field survey internship has been completed. Evidence of completion must be provided in the form of a certificate of attendance.
Pursuant to Article 72 of the RGEE, the course instructor may propose to the Jury that a student who has not submitted a certificate of participation or established a internship agreement at least fifteen days before the start of the examination session be refused enrolment.
