Main themes
The course addresses conservation biology, the branch of science that aims to provide the scientific foundations necessary for the conservation of biodiversity and its daily practice such as the management of natural environments and threatened populations. The course favors a multi-disciplinary approach integrating biology (ecology, biogeography, genetics) with political and socio-economic reflection.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| 1 | Through this course, students will gain a comprehensive view of the current biodiversity crisis, its causes, consequences and possible ways to limit it. |
Content
The course begins by defining the levels of biodiversity, its spatiotemporal variations and its current state.
What sets the current extinction crisis apart from the extinctions of the past is explained.
The various threats to biodiversity, which result from human activities affecting the environment, are then detailed, along with the risks incurred by biodiversity and by humanity.
This is followed by an overview of approaches to the conservation and management of territories and threatened species.

The assessment consists of an oral exam on the course content, based on questions randomly selected by the student. A 15-minute preparation time is allowed, followed by a 10-minute discussion. Particular attention is paid to the student's ability to develop a personal synthesis of the issues surrounding the biodiversity crisis, and of its causes and implications.
Online resources
The visuals presented in the course are available on Moodle, along with a full set of lectures recorded in a previous year. This makes it easier for students with scheduling conflicts to follow the course.
