Learning outcomes
At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to : | |
| This course aims to develop the student's active and passive skills in legal Dutch. It will enable the student to understand legislative, jurisprudential and doctrinal content in Dutch dealing with the themes covered in the course. It will also enable them to produce simple, coherent oral and written legal content. By the end of the course, students should have a good knowledge of the legal terminology covered during the course. They should also be able to understand a large number of legal texts in Dutch, and be able to answer related questions in Dutch. They should also be able to translate complex passages from Dutch into French and simpler passages from French into Dutch. The course should also develop listening comprehension skills. Finally, the student should be able to draft a simple legal document in Dutch and express himself/herself clearly orally on a given legal subject. To this end, the student may be asked to provide written or oral services. The contribution of this UE to the development and mastery of the skills and knowledge acquired in the program(s) can be found at the end of this sheet, in the section: “Programs/training courses offering this teaching unit (UE)”. |

Content
This course unit aims to familiarise students with the specific features of Dutch legal language.
Teaching methods
This course is taught exclusively on campus.
It is a practical, exercise-based course. Students are provided with a textbook, supplemented by PowerPoint presentations and additional materials. These resources cover a range of topics organised by theme.
To facilitate independent learning, particularly of conceptual vocabulary, the presentations are accompanied by text explanations, including contextual information where relevant, and occasional grammar explanations. They are complemented by exercises that are discussed and corrected in class. The textbook forms the basis of the course, together with additional materials and exercises provided to students. Audiovisual resources may also be used occasionally.
To support written and oral production tasks, a language instructor from the ILV attends two course sessions and provides individualised coaching.

Evaluation methods
The course is assessed through a written examination during the examination session (70%) and continuous assessment (30%).
The continuous assessment consists of two assignments: (1) the individual writing of a formal letter (adviesbrief); and (2) an oral presentation on a legal professional featured in the book Brieven aan jonge juristen. Each assignment accounts for 15% of the final grade and is co-assessed by the course instructor and the ILV language instructor. For the formal letter, which is completed at home, students are permitted to use online support tools, including generative artificial intelligence tools, provided that they clearly acknowledge such use, in accordance with the guidelines provided for this purpose.
The August examination session consists of a written examination. The grades obtained for the two continuous-assessment assignments will only be taken into account if this is beneficial to the student. If the two assignments have not been completed and the student takes the August examination, the course instructor may assign a substitute task that replaces both assignments.
