Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 During the course, the students will acquire the competencies needed for :
  • the preparation of an environmental application license (M.1.1, M.1.2, M.1.3, M.1.4, M.1.5)
  • the evaluation of the environmental impacts of a medium size project (in the context of the regulations on the evaluation of the impacts of projects on the environment) (M.2.6)
  • the preparation of an environmental analysis and the definition of an environmental actions program for a simple case in an industrial site (in the framework of the ISO 14001 standard on Environmental Management Systems) (M.3.1)
  • These competencies will be accompanied with knowledge of the related regulations (Belgium, France) and applicable methodologies (M.4.1).

Content
By the end of this course unit, students will be able to:
- Conduct environmental assessments of moderately complex issues,
- Identify the environmental framework and constraints applicable to a project (key issues, Belgian and European legal requirements, permits, key stakeholders, deadlines, etc.),
- To define action plans and make appropriate decisions to improve the environmental performance of a project or a field situation,
- To use AI appropriately to support environmental assessment and management methods.
Theoretical and practical content, examples. Sharing of the instructor’s professional experience. Two field trips (construction site + industrial setting) to illustrate and apply the concepts.
Teaching methods
Practical, career-oriented courses based on the instructor’s professional experience (role-playing exercises, examples) and two field visits to apply the theoretical knowledge gained in class to real-world situations.

In-person or distance learning (exclusively for working professionals or in cases of duly justified exceptions approved by the instructor).
To ensure continuous learning throughout the program, each class includes opportunities for interaction, the application of what has been learned, and feedback.
Evaluation methods
The certification assessment is based on two exams, each accounting for 50% of the final grade:
1. Writing a group report (NEIE) based on Visit 1
This report (approximately 15 pages) is prepared as Part 1 (environmental assessment) is taught and must be submitted within 3 weeks of the end of that part of the course.
If AI is used, this must be stated in the introduction to the report, and a mandatory appendix must be provided, including: the script(s) used, the results obtained, and a critical discussion by the student of the results and the improvements made to them. Failure to declare the use of AI or to provide a properly substantiated appendix containing an appropriate analysis is grounds for dismissing the entire report
2. Individual multiple-choice quiz covering both parts of the course and transposed to the 2nd visit
No access to the internet or computer tools is permitted.
The multiple-choice quiz is designed to assess students’ understanding of the entire course and, more specifically, their ability to develop action plans and make appropriate decisions to improve the environmental conditions observed on-site during the second visit.
Mandatory activities: Attendance at both organized visits in their entirety. Partial absence from one of the visits (late arrival) is considered a full absence. Only a duly justified absence (medical certificate or official documentation, such as mandatory presence at the internship site during the visit hours) allows a student to request an alternative assessment (a written assignment based on bibliographic data or a multiple-choice test adapted to general application cases).
In case of failure:
•    For Exam 1 (NEIE): The second session will consist of submitting a new, revised report based on the corrective feedback provided by the instructor (to be submitted between August 13 and 31 during the second session).
•    For Exam No. 2 (multiple-choice): A new individual multiple-choice exam will be administered between August 13 and 31 during the second session.
Other information
Precursory courses : Second cycle Evaluation : Two written reports, based on the site visits Support : Course, examples of reports, support documents Teaching team : Trainer professionally active in these disciplines Miscellaneous : The training requires 1 visit (2 hours) on or near the campus and 1 half-day visit in an industrial site
