Main themes
Proficiency in the Armenian language and introduction to the history and culture of Armenia.
Alternating with LGLOR2654, this course deals with Armenian texts that were either written in Armenian or translated from Greek into Armenian. Through the study and commentary of selected texts, Armenian history and culture are also studied. Depending on the texts, particular attention may be devoted to the study of manuscripts, palaeography, and the methodology of textual criticism.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

1 read, translate and analyse ancient and medieval Armenian texts of an advanced level of difficulty;

2 use the relevant tools;

3 carry out personal research into Armenian language and texts;

Content
The course deals with ancient and medieval Armenian language and literature at an advanced level, through the study of texts: historiographical works, patristic texts, hagiography, epistolography, documentary texts, etc. Depending on the year, these may be either original or translated works, especially Armenian texts translated from Greek.
Grammar (morphology, syntax, vocabulary, etymology) and the history of the language are covered in depth; comparisons are made with other languages; if applicable, an introduction to Middle Armenian is included.
The course is designed as an introduction to research, and requires a certain amount of preparation by the student.
Teaching methods
The course is organized like a seminar: the texts are prepared by the students, then analysed during class time, and additional grammatical, linguistic, historical, and cultural commentaries are supplied. Occasionally, supplementary explanations on special points of Armenian history, literature, and art can be provided. Depending on the circumstances and the students' level, the course may include a cursive reading. A list of recommended readings is supplied.
Evaluation methods
Continuous assessment based on the student's preparatory work for each class (50%), supplemented by an oral examination based on the texts studied during the course (50%). Passing the course is conditional on passing the oral examination. If the continuous assessment is failed, it will be replaced in the second session by a written examination. The continuous assessment is not applicable in the context of a cursive reading.
Other information
The teacher will meet with the students at the beginning of the term to set the schedule.
The course is taught in English; it may also be taught in French at the students' request.
A basic knowledge of Armenian (e.g. course LGLOR1653 or LGLOR1654) is required. Knowledge of Greek is helpful but not required.
