Main themes

The learning units in “analysis and composition” integrate contributions from architectural history, architectural theory, and the human sciences. They aim to develop two movements: the movement that starts from a whole and uncovers its parts; and the movement that seeks to assemble these parts. Through these two movements, the learning unit addresses the identifications of elements (what is a project composed of?); principles of composition (how are elements combined?); and, to a lesser extent, those of the project constraints (what limits and enables the compositions?) and the project rationale (what are the project’s intentions?). The learning units in “analysis and composition” explore different scales: from objects, buildings, urban environments to landscapes.
The learning unit “Urban Analysis and Composition” focuses on the urban scale, and addresses the following themes: The making of the city, the analysis of its components, the logics of their assembly, the formal determinants; Domesticity, institutions, public spaces, infrastructures; Sites and projects; The evolution of urban programs; Key figures of urban planning.
The drawing is put forth as a privileged tool for analysis and composition.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	Distinguish and describe the meaning of the terms 'analysis' and 'composition' when applied to the urban scale. Explain the major theoretical and practical currents in the making of the city. Situate the paradigm shifts in composition throughout the history of cities and their equivalents in the arts. Use drawing to isolate the elements and associative rules that constitute an urban project. Recognize through drawing the compositional modes specific to urban projects. Apply analytical operators to any urban project that allow to understand its rationale. Develop a coherent and synthetic discourse based on the analysis of urban projects.

Content

The course aims to provide a more in-depth description of the urban environment through an understanding of how the city is made, an analysis of its constituent parts, the logic of concentration or dispersion, and the determinants of urban form.
Through the reading of specific situations or projects, theoretical works or movements in the history of urban planning, the course builds a theoretical and practical field based on the analysis and composition of the urban.

Evaluation methods

The assessment is a piece of analytical work to be handed in and presented during the session. The subject of the work is an open reflection on the tools for analysing an urban situation (description and drawing). This reflection is based on a given urban situation and is developed from the materials, texts and concepts presented during the theory classes. Particular attention will be paid to describing the operations involved in reading and writing about urban territories (understanding, analysis, reception, existing situation, etc.).  By discussing the documents, students will demonstrate their ability to abstract, synthesise and communicate on tools for analysing and composing the urban environment. These documents will be uploaded onto the Moodle and presented during an oral session, according to the timetable provided.
