At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

Specific learning outcomes on completion of this teaching unit On completion of this teaching unit, the student is able to: List tools and technologies that can be used by an interpreter to help in the preparation or delivery of an interpreting assignment; Describe how to use computer-assisted interpreting (CAI) tools for preparing and delivering an interpreting assignment; Describe which tools are best applied at each step of an interpreting assignment; Identify the main challenges associated with remote interpreting and manage appropriate mitigation strategies; Demonstrate an understanding of the main functionalities in Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI) platforms; Set up and operate essential RSI equipment to ensure professional interpreting conditions in remote environments; Use and compare key Remote Simultaneous Interpreting (RSI) platforms.

Content

Presentation and practical use technologies and platforms to support interpreters in the preparation, delivery and management of their interpreting assignments.
This introductory course on interpreting technologies is divided into two parts:
Part 1:
Introduction to and practical use of automatic speech recognition and speech synthesis technologies, and tools for terminology extraction and management.
Part 2:
Introduction to and practical use of remote simultaneous interpreting technologies and platforms, and an introduction to computer-assisted interpreting tools.

Teaching methods

Lectures and practical exercises.

Evaluation methods

Part 1 - January session and August/September session: written examination.
Part 2 - January session: continuous assessment.
Part 2 - August/September session: oral examination.
The final grade consists of two integrated parts. The two parts of the course are weighted as follows: 40% for Part 1 and 60% for Part 2.
If the final grade for the course is below 10/20, only the part(s) failed during the January session will be retaken during the August/September session. In the event of unjustified absence from either part, both parts must be retaken during the August/September session. If the course is not passed by the end of the academic year, both parts must be retaken the following year.
The specific practical arrangements relating to the two parts of the course will be set out in due course on the Moodle platform.
