Specific learning outcomes at the end of the learning unit At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to: understand oral discourse (in French, level C2+) or signed discourse (in LSFB, level C1) using specialised terminology, particularly in the legal, socio-cultural, linguistic and educational fields; prepare and produce a specialised speech, in French (level C2+) or in LSFB (level B2/C1), using relevant jargon specific to the disciplines covered (legal, socio-cultural, linguistic, educational); continually update their linguistic knowledge and keep abreast of developments in LSFB and French in their specialist fields.

Content

French section (Chahrazed Jendoubi) 3.00 pm
The aim of the LINTP2701 course is to improve students’ proficiency in French. A range of written and oral exercises will help them to expand their general and specialised vocabulary. They will work on synonyms, intonation and collocations, and will ensure they use the appropriate register through role-play exercises. The various presentations and assignments will cover current affairs and general knowledge topics, and will increase in length and level of difficulty. Furthermore, students will develop their presentation skills and eloquence, and refine their understanding of terms relating to the social, legal and medical fields. In this way, they will achieve a greater command of the French language, an essential prerequisite for high-quality interpreting to and from this language. This course requires active participation from students.

LSFB section (Chantal Gerday) 15 hours

• Development of highly iconic structures centred on social themes (health, law, etc.)
• Exercises on highly iconic structures (personal transfers, double transfers, etc.) and the transformation of lexical signs into highly iconic structures.

Teaching methods

French section (Chahrazed Jendoubi)

• Readings, written and oral exercises, presentations, flipped learning, and student-led presentations on social and current affairs topics.
• Face-to-face teaching with the option of distance learning.

LSFB section (Chantal Gerday)

• Assigned exercises, presentations, and student-led presentations on social and current affairs topics.
• Face-to-face classes

Evaluation methods

The activities carried out during the four-month term are designed for learning purposes and serve as preparation for the assessment leading to certification.
Assessment leading to certification for the French component (Chahrazed Jendoubi) – 50 per cent of the final mark for the course unit
The assessment is broken down as follows:

• student presentation on a given topic: 10 per cent of the final mark for the course unit
• written examination: 10 per cent of the final mark for the course unit
• oral examination: 30 per cent of the final mark for the course unit

The three parts of the assessment will cover different social issues and will enable students to demonstrate their level of competence according to varying degrees of preparation. The precise details of the three assessments will be explained during the course.
Certification assessment for the LSFB component (Chantal Gerday) – 50% of the final mark for the course unit

• oral examination: 50% of the final mark for the course unit

The final mark will consist of two integrated parts (the French part and the LSFB part). Passing both parts is essential to demonstrate the skills and knowledge defined in the course’s learning outcomes. The exam can only be passed if each assessment activity is passed. If the final mark is below 10/20, only the part failed during the January sitting will be retaken during the August/September sitting.

Attendance at face-to-face sessions is compulsory. Pursuant to Article 73 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, an student’s unauthorised absence from learning activities may result in disciplinary action; course lecturers may propose to the examination board that a student who has not attended at least 80 per cent of the classes be barred from registering for the January or August/September sessions.
