Specific learning outcomes at the end of the learning unit At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to: perform unidirectional interpreting (French-LSFB) in consecutive mode (with or without note-taking) or simultaneous mode, using relevant specialist vocabulary (French, level C2+ and LSFB, level B2+/C1) and ensuring the fluency, accuracy and coherence of the message; appropriate the content of a speech in French (C2+ level) by identifying the main ideas, communicative intentions, argumentative progression and implicit elements (presuppositions, allusions, intertextuality, etc.); deliver a fluent, coherent and nuanced discourse in LSFB (level B2+/C1), using linguistic structures appropriate to the communication situation and the target audience; analyse the cultural and discourse implicit in a source message in French, and propose equivalents adapted to LSFB, while respecting the registers and norms of the target language;  reflect critically on his/her performance, identifying points to watch out for (additions, omissions, misunderstandings, register) and formulating concrete suggestions for improvement; use speech preparation strategies (identify specialised sign language and vocabulary, anticipate content), and enrich their LSFB and French vocabularies on a continuous basis.

Content

Theories of simultaneous interpreting.
Practical interpreting exercises based on authentic speeches or texts delivered in class, as well as audio or video recordings addressing current social issues.

Teaching methods

Face-to-face lectures, tutorials in the interpreting studio or off-site, and homework (e-learning).
This module aims to help students master simultaneous interpreting techniques. The course consists of practical exercises in simultaneous interpreting from French to LSFB and from LSFB to French, followed by detailed feedback from the lecturer on the student’s performance. Emphasis is placed on a deep and nuanced understanding of the message, mastery of the discourse, high-quality language expression (LSFB/French) with a high degree of accuracy, and effective communication.

Evaluation methods

The activities carried out during the four-month term are designed for learning purposes and serve as preparation for the certification assessments.
The certification assessment comprises four components:

• a class assignment comprising an interpreting task from French into LSFB and a reflective analysis of one’s own performance, accounting for 10 per cent of the final mark;
• a class assignment comprising an interpreting performance from LSFB into French and a reflective analysis of the student’s own performance, accounting for 10 per cent of the final mark;
• a final simultaneous interpreting test from French into LSFB, accounting for 40 per cent of the final mark;
• a final simultaneous interpreting test from LSFB into French, accounting for 40 per cent of the final mark.

Both final tests consist of interpreting a speech lasting between 5 and 7 minutes
Both final tests are assessed separately. Passing both the ‘FR→LSFB’ final exam and the ‘LSFB→FR’ final exam is essential to demonstrate the skills and knowledge set out in the learning outcomes for the course unit. A fail mark in either of these two final exams results in a fail mark for the entire LINTP2708 course unit.
In the event of a fail in one of the two assessments, only the failed assessment must be retaken in the next examination session. The mark obtained in the passed assessment is retained.
If the unit is not passed within a year, all exams will have to be retaken the following year.
Attendance at classroom sessions is compulsory. In accordance with article 73 of the General Regulations governing Studies and Examinations, unjustified absence from a course may be penalised, and the course teachers may propose to the jury that a student who has not attended at least 80% of the classes be refused registration for the June or August/September sessions.
