Content
This teaching unit involves
- the revision and extension of general vocabulary as well as specific (field-related) vocabulary,
- the revision of specific Dutch structures. The understanding of these structures will be consolidated by means of oral and written exercices,
- the training and development of receptive skills (reading and listening) as well as oral and written production.
Teaching methods
- Lessons in groups of 20 to 25 students.
- This course includes on-site classroom activities. In the event of force majeure, teaching arrangements may be adjusted. Students will be notified as soon as possible.
- Revision and extension of general vocabulary and the expansion of subject-specific vocabulary (book 'Introduction au vocabulaire juridique' - De Boeck Supérieur - I. Demeulenaere e.al.)
- Contextual revision of specific Dutch grammar points. These points are consolidated by means of oral and written exercises.
- Training and development of reading and listening skills followed by productive writing and speaking exercises.
- The students will also have to take part in the TANDEM project. This is a language exchange project with KU Leuven. Full details about this project will be given at the beginning of the academic year. In exceptional circumstances and in consultation with the lecturer, an alternative assignment may be proposed; the details of which will be posted on Moodle.
Evaluation methods
The admission to this course is subject to a placement test.
Option to be exempted: students who have achieved a sufficient mark to sit the exemption test will be personally invited to take this test in week 2. Depending on the results of this test, the coordinator will decide whether or not to grant exemption from this module. If an exemption is granted, the result of the exemption test will count as the final mark for this module.
Several assessment opportunities are scheduled for this module.
Q1
- A continuous assessment test (PE1), based on the vocabulary of the topics covered in class, which will count for 1 point.
- a Q1 end-of-term exam held during the January exam period, which will count for 5 points;
- the completion of the Q1 partial portfolio as part of the TANDEM project, which will count for 1 point.
Q2
- a continuous assessment test (PE2), based on the vocabulary covered in class, which will count for 1 point.
- an end-of-term exam for Q2, held during the June exam period, which will count for 6 points.
- an end-of-term oral examination in S13 of Q2, which will count for 3 points.
- the completion of the final portfolio as part of the TANDEM project, which will count for 3 marks.
The mark obtained in January will correspond to the result of the January session examination, the PE1 test and the partial portfolio for the Q1 TANDEM project. This part of the assessment will not be resat in the May/June session. The mark will be included in the final mark.
Absence from a continuous assessment test (PE1/PE2)
In the event of an unjustified absence from a continuous assessment test, the student will receive a mark of 0 for the test. In the event of an officially justified absence, the test will not be taken into account and the mark for the assessment will be adjusted accordingly.
Absence from an end-of-term examination
All parts of the assessment are compulsory. An unjustified absence will result in a mark of ‘absent’ for the entire assessment. In the event of a justified absence (e.g. due to illness), a medical certificate must be sent to the chair of the examination board, the faculty secretariat, the lecturer and the course coordinator (nele.sterkendries@uclouvain.be), as stipulated in the examination regulations.
We would like to remind you that if a student is absent from an examination – even if the absence is justified – the student will not be able to sit that examination on another date during the examination period. In fact, under UCLouvain’s General Regulations on Studies and Examinations, the option to retake an exam at a later date during the examination period in the event of a justified absence is only available if it is not possible to sit that exam in a subsequent examination period during the academic year.
During the August/September session, a single written exam covering the material from Q1 and Q2 will be organised. This written exam will be worth 12 points, and the oral component 4 points. A student who achieved a mark of 10 or above in the January mid-term exam but ends the year with a mark below 10 will therefore have to retake the entire module in August/September. The TANDEM project or the alternative assignment cannot be resat during the second session. The student retains the mark they achieved for this module in the second session.
In the event of force majeure, the evaluation arrangements may be adjusted. Students will be notified as soon as possible.
