Main themes

This course provides supervision and guidance to students in defining and developing the research problem of their final dissertation, in accordance with the scientific standards expected at the university level and the specific research orientations of the Specialized Master’s program. 
It aims to strengthen students’ engagement with scientific research through practical application and the introduction of methodologies commonly employed in the field of heritage rehabilitation—including conservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse—building upon the knowledge and skills acquired in previous course units. 
This process enables students to produce an original and independent research project that may either engage with contemporary themes emerging from current heritage research or develop a conservation or restoration project addressing issues in built heritage. The application of the integrated conservation methodology will serve to reflect the diversity and interdisciplinary nature of the program.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	Define a research question related to a clearly identified dissertation topic.
2	Formulate a relevant research problem based on a carefully developed state of the art.
3	Determine an appropriate methodology and field of study suited to the research question.
4	Summarize and write a coherent synthesis of the research topic and question.
5	Assess the scientific value of documentary sources related to the research question and provide a critical evaluation of them.
6	Formulate a conservation–restoration question related to heritage, structure and synthesize an appropriate response, and communicate it effectively through oral, graphic, and written means.

Content

Scientific research directly related to the conservation/restoration/conversion of immovable and landscape cultural heritage; analysis and methodological tools for integrated conservation, reflecting the diversity of the course content.
