This course unit is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and practical tools required to become future science and physics teachers, by enabling them to put into practice, both during their teaching placements and through microteaching activities conducted as part of the seminars, the theoretical concepts and principles addressed in the didactics courses and seminars.
The teaching placement is structured as follows:

• From October to February, with a first cooperating teacher: classroom and out-of-class observation, classroom teaching, and participation in activities related to the teaching profession that take place outside regular lessons.
• From February to April, with a second cooperating teacher: classroom and out-of-class observation, classroom teaching, and participation in activities related to the teaching profession that take place outside regular lessons.

The cooperating teachers accredited by UCLouvain are selected by the placement coordinators.
Pursuant to Article 36, §3 of the FIE Decree of 7 February 2019, “For students enrolled in the second cycle of the programme leading to the Master’s degree in Teaching, Section 5, who are employed in upper secondary education, the duties performed as part of their professional position may be recognized as teaching placements.”
Each student’s professional situation will be assessed by the academic placement coordinator, taking into account factors such as professional experience, the number of physics teaching hours, and the target student population. A placement visit will be conducted at the student’s workplace in order to assess their teaching competencies. On the basis of this assessment, the number of placement hours to be completed at another institution, under the supervision of a cooperating teacher accredited by UCLouvain, will be determined.

Teaching methods

The teaching activities will be conducted by the course instructors, primarily through co-construction with the students.

Evaluation methods

The teaching placements and seminars will be assessed by the teaching team.
Students will be assessed as follows:

• Teaching placements: 75%
• Observations: 10%
• Digital portfolio: 13%

Each of these three activities must be successfully completed with a grade of at least 10/20 for the course unit to be passed.

• Placement Passport: 2%

In order for students to commence their teaching placement, two tests will be administered and must be passed with a minimum score of 14/20 in the Major and 12/20 in the Minor. Details of the grade awarded for this activity are provided in the Placement Handbook.
The principle of the absorbing grade applies to these four assessment components.
Attendance at the seminars is mandatory. Pursuant to Article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the course instructors may ask the examination board to refuse a student’s registration for the June or September examination session if the student has attended fewer than 80% of the seminars.

The use of AI must be explicitly acknowledged and referenced in accordance with the applicable rules. In all cases, students remain responsible for the content of their work, regardless of the sources used.
