Content
This course aims at teaching students how to make a semiotic analysis of web sites in an autonomous way. The categories presented here are also useful for analyzing other forms of digital communication.
To do that, the course presents:
To do that, the course presents:
- basic notions and concepts of semiotics, in order to apply it to the digital world;
- some considerations on some concepts and notions that are important to understand the digital world from a semiotic point of view (in particular, the screen as a text, multimediality, distinction between text and paratext);
- the components of a semiotic analysis grid for web sites, specifically from a comparative point of view.
Teaching methods
Lectures, reading of texts, accompanied exercises, practical work.
Evaluation methods
2 points: Active participation in class (specific details will be provided at the beginning of the course).
4 points: submission of a written report analyzing a website, completed as a group. Participation in the group project is mandatory to pass the course: an absence from the group project will result in a “no-show” grade for the January exam session, regardless of the grade on the individual written exam during the exam session.
14 points: individual written exam during the exam period. If a student fails this part of the assessment (scoring fewer than 7 out of 14 points), this score automatically becomes the final grade.
Second exam period: The 2 points for active class participation cannot be made up and are carried over to the second exam period if they were earned. If all students in a group must retake the exam, they must redo the analysis assignment and submit a new group analysis report (worth 4 points), in addition to the individual written exam during the exam period; if only one or more members receive a failing grade, they must retake only the individual written exam during the retake period (which is worth 14 points), and in this case, the portion of the grade related to the group analysis report is retained. In the second exam session as well, if a student fails the individual written exam (scoring less than 7 out of 14 points), that score automatically becomes the final grade.
The use of artificial intelligence in the assessment tests for this course is governed by the rules set out in the relevant faculty memorandum, which is available on the faculty intranet site in the information for students section (see https://cdn.uclouvain.be/groups/cms-editors-espo/documents-tout-public/Note%20IA%20%C3%A9tudiants.pdf).
