Prerequisites

The prerequisite(s) for this Teaching Unit (Unité d’enseignement – UE) for the programmes/courses that offer this Teaching Unit are specified at the end of this sheet.
Content
The theoretical training aims to (1) demonstrate the benefits of different forms of subcellular compartmentalization; (2) integrate molecules into this compartmentalized context (cellular biochemistry); (3) explain, based on elementary cellular reactions, the physiological translations at the organism level (cellular physiology); (4) highlight the temporal dimension of life by presenting cell biology as a series of responses to challenges that lead to constraints (cell evolution); (5) introduce some exemplary pathologies that are best explained by cell biology (cell pathology). Practical training aims to (1) identify the forms of organization of living matter at the ultrastructural level, emphasizing topological and scale relationships; (2) understand and evaluate methods of analysis in cell biology.
Teaching methods
The theoretical course covers all the topics of the course and aims to develop a systemic approach to normal and pathological conditions, as well as the integration of knowledge from several disciplines and biological systems. Tutorial sessions (TDs) are provided to support the theoretical training and offer activities that enable students to better understand and integrate the concepts covered in the course. These activities are based, in particular, on examples, exercises, and materials illustrating certain topics covered in the course. Students will also be required to interpret primary data and use their theoretical knowledge to analyse and understand the experimental results presented.
Evaluation methods
The final assessment covers both the theoretical part (taught in lectures by the three professors) and the tutorial part (TDs) (taught by the teaching assistants). The theoretical part consists of a written examination based on a series of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and open-ended questions requiring complete answers (QROCs). The exam is intended, in particular, to assess students’ ability to integrate information from different parts of the course or from their general training, and/or to analyse one or two ultrastructural documents within a molecular and functional context. The distribution of marks depends on the number of teaching hours and corresponds approximately to 50% for Prof. Constantinescu’s section, and 25% for each of the sections taught by Prof. Tyteca and Prof. Pierreux. The tutorial sessions (TDs) are assessed during the written course examination through open-ended questions covering the different sessions and their links with the theoretical part. The examination is graded out of 20 points. Since the TDs are designed to support the theoretical course, the professors may include questions related to the TDs in the theoretical section of the examination. Students are strongly advised not to neglect any of the sections or subjects covered in the course. A serious deficiency in one or more sections/subjects of the examination
Other information
Attendance at tutorials is mandatory and essential for successful completion of the course. Student attendance is checked during tutorial sessions. Students must notify one of the teaching assistants of any known scheduling conflicts (after the release of this schedule and the assignment of groups) no later than one week before the first tutorial session. After this date, no further group changes will be permitted. In the event of an absence from tutorials, the absence must be justified by a medical certificate or any other valid supporting documentation (certificate of transportation delay, death certificate, etc.) and must be sent by email to the following address: admin-tphistobio@uclouvain.be no later than the day following the end of the incapacity (see Article 103 of the RGEE) . After this deadline, the absence will be considered unexcused. Successful completion of this course is contingent upon participation in the tutorials. Instructors reserve the right to cancel the exam grade (0/20, in January and August) in the event of repeated absences—even if excused—from these tutorials.
Online resources
Presentations and texts will be available on Moodle.
