Prerequisites

The LANGL1823 course or any other equivalent course (Reading skills roughly corresponding to the level B1+ of « the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages » and listening skills corresponding to the level B1 of the same framework.)

Main themes

The course is based on real-life professional-type situations in the field of criminology.
Teaching activity will focus on :

• taking part in a meeting
• giving a talk on a criminology-oriented topic
• making/receiving a phone call
• questioning a witness, a suspect, '
• negotiating with different stakeholders
• writing an e-mail, '

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :

to function in the relevant social and professional contexts (law enforcement, the judicial world, the execution of criminal sentences, the field of prevention policies and psycho-social interventions), to develop the communication techniques appropriate to professional life, to improve command of the language (general and specific vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation). At the end of the term, the student should have acquired oral skills roughly corresponding to the level B1 of « the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ».

Content

The course aims at enabling the student to function in the relevant social and professional contexts (law enforcement, the judicial world, the execution of criminal sentences, the field of prevention policies and psycho-social interventions). The student will practise the language in an interactive way through classroom professional-type activities and will therefore be exposed to a variety of real-life situations requiring specific language functions. Regular feedback on the student's oral production will help him consolidate and improve his grammar use, vocabulary accuracy as well as pronunciation.
At the end of the term, the student should have acquired oral skills roughly corresponding to the level B1 of « the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages ».

Teaching methods

The LANGL 2423 course includes 30 hours of on-site classroom activities as well as self-tuition on Moodle. 

• Interactive communication through classroom activities
• Exposure to a variety of real-life situations requiring specific language functions
• Consolidation and improvement of grammar use, vocabulary accuracy as well as pronunciation
• Regular feedback on the students oral production

Evaluation methods

Attendance at this language course is required. In accordance with article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the teacher may propose to the jury that a student who has two unjustified absences for the course be refused registration for the January, June or September session.
January/June exam (100%)

1. Continuous assessment (50%)
2. Oral exam (50%): An individual formal presentation of a criminology-oriented topic based on a portfolio of scientific articles

September exam (100% or 50%)
Same modalities as in January/June. The continuous assessment is taken into account if it is to the advantage of students.
