Prerequisites

Students should have completed a language course of at least B2 level in the 'Common European Framework for Languages' (CEFR). The LANGL1856 course taken by students in BAC 2 is a good basis for the MA1 course.

Main themes

The course focuses on learning the correct expressions and vocabulary to be able to explain dental treatment to an English speaking patient, to give technical explanations during a Powerpoint presentation on dentistry, as well as to be able to converse on everyday topics (socializing, telephone conversation, making an appointment, professional meeting).

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	This course focuses principally on developing speaking skills so that students will be able to greet an English speaking counterpart, express themselves without too much conspicuous searching for words, on familiar or less familiar topics related to their interests and professional life.
2	The student should also be able to give a structured Powerpoint presentation on dental health care or dental techniques and understand those given by their peers.
This requires using and pronouncing correctly dental terms, as well as broadening existing general vocabulary.  Grammar structures and idiomatic expressions used correspond to the B2+ C1 level of the 'Common European Framework for Languages'.

Content

Students should be able to communicate spontaneously and fluently to a degree that allows for normal interaction with a native-speaker interlocutor , with a B2-C1 level in speaking of the Common European Framework for Languages (European Council).
Specialised vocabulary pertaining to dentistry is acquired via watching short videos in class (on gingivitis, root canal treatment, tooth extraction, etc). Consolidation takes place through role plays and conversations in small groups, as well as Powerpoint presentations on specific dental techniques. The final oral exam consists in a dentist/patient consultation role-play.

Teaching methods

• This is a 30-hour course taught 2 hours a week throughout the first term 
• Face-to-face classes with a maximum of 20 students.
• Moodle platform with short films on dentistry.
• Phone conversations
• Role-plays
• Simulation of patient/dentist consultations.

Evaluation methods

The evaluation is made up of different marks awarded to :

• Attendance and active participation to the class (10%)
• Oral presentations in class (25%)
• Vocabulary and grammar testt (20%)
• Phone conversation (10%)
• Pronunciation test (10%)
• Oral exam which involves a dentist/patient consultation role-play preceded by a phone conversation to make an appointment (25%)

Students who do not attend the oral exam (justifed or unjustified absence) will be considered as absent (justified or unjustified absence).
Attendance at this language course is required. In accordance with article 72 of the General Regulations for Studies and Examinations, the teacher may propose to the jury that a student who has at least two unjustified absences for the course, be refused registration for the January or September session.
August/September Exam

• Students who failed in June but who got 10/20 or higher for the continuous assessment will have to present :
• Written test on the « Usage Notes » (grammar & vocabulary)
• Consultation 
• Pronunciation Test
• Students who failed in June and got less than 10/20 for the continuous evaluation should present:​​​​​​ 
• Written test on the « Usage Notes » (grammar & vocabulary)
• Consultation 
• Pronunciation Test
• 10 min oral presentation linked to dentistry based on a 10 page English article to be sent to your teacher one week before your exam.
