How does the human species occupy the Earth’s surface ? The core of our focus in this course will be to understand the broad groups of factors that influence the spatial organisation of human activities, and the consequences of these spatial patterns.
To understand this question, we explore it across different scales, from the internal structure of cities to international exchanges and their organisation. The relations between what can be observed across different scales (housing and social issues, periurbanisation, economic development…) are highlighted.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	To be able to discern the spatial aspects of a given issue (location of human activities, people and goods flows, social issues, territorial development policies…). To understand the articulation between spatial scales from neighborhood to, landscape, region and beyond. To use wisely spatial data and cartographic documents to illustrate these issues.

Content

In this class we will study
-fundamental concepts of geography
-the various phases of the development of geography as it is practiced today
-some classic models of geography, and their relation to practices in various areas.

Teaching methods

Course with activities such as polls, quizzes and preparing collaborative summary notes.

Evaluation methods

Written exam on lecture material: 50%
Practicals with reports: 50%
