Main themes

This course plans to:
  1. provide an overview of the different Greek dialects and to go into greater depth on selected aspects;
  2. reading and commenting on significant extracts from pre-classical texts.
Content
Study of non-Attic Greek dialects through the reading of texts. Students will be introduced to the Ionian (Herodotus), Aeolian (Sappho and Alceaeus), Dorian (Alcman) and Boeotian (Corinne) dialects. Particular attention will be paid to the mixed language of Homer, its specific characteristics, the problem of its origins and evolution, and the study of the dactylic hexameter. There is also a chapter on the Mycenaean dialect of the Linear B texts of the 2nd millennium BC.
As cursory reading, students translate Book XXIV of the Iliad.
Teaching methods
Lectures (which may be combined with presentations by the students).

Written examination.
