Prerequisites

This teaching unit is intended for real beginners i.e. for students who studied only one foreign language at school (either English or German) and subsequently never studied Dutch as well as for students who followed only 2 hours a week of Dutch during two years.
The 30 hours of the first semester are remedial hours intended to learn or revise the basic  elements of Dutch (level A1 of the CEFRL).

This teaching unit is structured around subjects reflecting cultural and everyday life in Flanders.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this learning unit, the student is able to :
1	Reading Comprehension: understand simple texts that consist mainly of high frequency everyday or job related language. understand the main points of a text developing a subject. understand a short factual text in Dutch about a legal topic without necessarily grasping all the details. Level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
2	Listening Comprehension - Individual : grasp the main points of a short presentation bearing on a familiar subject provided the language uses is standard and clearly articulated. understand the main point of many radio or TV programs on current affairs or topics of personal or professional interest when the delivery is relatively slow and clear. Listening Comprehension - Interactive  : understand enough in order to take part in a simple everyday conversation bearing on familiar matters (study, leisure, work, ...). Level A2+ of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
3	Speaking Skills - Individual : introduce his/herself and to speak about his/her family, as well as his/her life environment in simple terms. give a short , well-prepared talk about a familiar topic. Speaking Skills - Interactive : handle short social exchanges and to communicate in simple routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information. Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
4	Writing Skills: write a short message inquiring about basic information. write short, simple notes relating to matters in areas of immediate need. Level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
5	Code Vocabulary : productive command of the basic vocabulary (1500-2000 words) Grammar : productive command of the basic structures of Dutch The use of vocabulary and grammar is seen from a communicative viewpoint. Nevertheless, accuracy is not neglected. Culture: In the development of all the above-mentioned skills the course will aim at making the students aware of Dutch and Flemish cultural aspects.

Content

This teaching unit involves  

• the elementary vocabulary and the basic Dutch structures, the understanding of these structures will be consolidated by means of oral and written exercices, a first approach to legal vocabulary in Q2,
• the complete range of skills (listening, reading, writing and speaking) and the supporting material reflects everyday life in Flanders.

ASSESSMENT Q1

Breakdown

- Permanent assessment : 1 individual task & 1 joint task - 3 points - Test Deel 1 & 2 (grammar & vocabulary) - in class - 3 points - Written partial: Deel 1 to 4 inclusive (grammar, vocabulary, written expression & reading) - in auditorium - week 13 or 14 (depending on the availability of auditoria) - 14 points

ASSESSMENT Q2

Breakdown

- Allocation of the January mark  - 4 points - Permanent assessment: 1 individual task - 2 points - Test Deel 5 (vocabulary) - in class - 1 point - Test Deel 6 (grammar & vocabulary) - in class - 2 points - Written exam : Deel 5 to 8  inclusive + passive and imperfect + legal voc. (grammar, vocabulary, written expression & reading) in an auditorium at the end of the term (outside exam session) - 11 points  There is no oral exam.

ASSESSMENT AUGUST-SEPTEMBER SESSION

Breakdown

- Written exam : Deel 1 to 8 inclusive + passive and imperfect + legal voc. (grammar, vocabulary, written expression & reading) - in auditorium - 17 points - Permanent assessment Q2 if in student's favour - 3 points. If this is not the case, we will disregard it and only count the written exam (/20).   There is no oral exam.

All evaluation parts are mandatory. However, an absence (without official justification) from a permanent evaluation test will result in a '0' for this same test; an absence from a partial or written exam and/or oral exam will imply an absence score for the entire evaluation and the student will therefore be prohibited from enrolling in the other parts of the evaluation.
 
In case of justified absence (for example due to illness), the certificate must be sent to the president of the jury, to the faculty secretariat with a copy of the professor and course coordinator.
Article 103. – Any student registered for the exams who is unable to appear before one or more of them shall promptly notify the president of the jury and the faculty administration of the reason for his absence. No later than the day following the end of the impediment, he or she shall submit to the faculty administration the original of any supporting documents, that is to say a medical certificate or any other document whose probative value is left to the sovereign discretion of the president of the jury. However, where that day is a Saturday, a Sunday, 27 September or a public holiday, the day of delivery of the documents shall be postponed to the next earliest day which is not one of these days.
We remind you that in case of absence, even justified, from an exam, you will not be able to present this exam at another date during the session.
Indeed, the possibility of taking an exam at a later date, during the session, in case of justified absence is not conceivable, pursuant to the General Regulations for Studies and Exams of the UCLouvain, only when it is not possible to present this exam at a later session in the academic year.
