Introduction

Like a child, a philosopher looks at the world with wonder, seeking to see it differently and to ponder events. Studying philosophy means learning to think critically and question what is going wrong in one's surroundings, or on the contrary, what is going well. A philosopher is called upon to deconstruct the obvious and the reference points which make up everyday life: language, the body, the relationship to others, space, time and death.
Being a philosopher also entails being open to rich and diverse research perspectives, and entering into dialogue with other fields of knowledge.  A philosopher tackles the questions which constitute our philosophical tradition as well as those which characterise our times: s/he discovers the thoughts inherited from the past in order to construct ‘figures of the thinkable’ for today and tomorrow.

Your future job

There are numerous career paths for graduates in both the public and the private sector, with philosophers increasingly sought for their critical thinking skills, their ability to summarise information, their inventiveness and their rigour.

As a result, there are many and varied career opportunities:

• Teaching philosophy in secondary and non-university higher education
• Public administration and private sector: consultancy, etc.
• Cultural institutions: museums, theatres, cultural centres
• Associations: non-governmental organisations, non-profit associations and other organisations with a social vocation
• Books and publishing: collection management, choice of publications, proofreading, relations with authors, bookshops, libraries, documentation centres, etc.
• Information and communications sector: journalism, literary criticism, communications training, advertising
• Academic research
• Human resources management and corporate cultural patronage

 

Your programme

The programme consists of

1. general education, providing you with the knowledge you need to pursue higher education (languages, literature, human and social sciences, psychology, etc.); and
2. specialised education in philosophy, providing you with a general knowledge of philosophy and the tools you need to develop your own philosophical thinking.

This specialised education consists of theoretical courses, which will provide you with the necessary basic knowledge of the history of philosophy, and numerous seminars during which you will use your skills and learn to read and analyse philosophical texts, formulate your own arguments, and develop your intellectual curiosity through personal research.

Once you have completed your bachelor's degree, you may begin a master's degree in philosophy or ethics.

Our dual bachelor's degrees are one of the special features of UCLouvain Saint-Louis - Bruxelles.
Students can take a second bachelor's degree, in tandem with their main bachelor's degree. This means that they complete their main programme with a minimum of 60 and a maximum of 125 additional credits spread over several years. The additional bachelor's degree can be completed after the main bachelor's degree. A series of courses taken as part of the main programme count towards the additional bachelor's degree and are therefore no longer subject to assessment. The additional bachelor's degree has the same value as the main bachelor's degree and provides immediate access to the corresponding master's degree.

The following additional bachelor's degrees are available:

• Bachelor in French and Romance Languages and Letters [Dual Bachelor’s degree for the holder of a Bachelor in Philosophy]
• Bachelor in History [Supplementary Bachelor in History for the holder of a Bachelor in Philosophy]
