Introduction

Language and literature studies open the mind to the world. The objective is to provide you with a rigorous general education combined with linguistic and literary specialization in two areas: Latin studies and French studies.

At the end of the bachelor's degree, you will:

  • Have acquired a strong general, literary, and historical culture.
  • Have honed your writing and argumentation skills.
  • Have developed literary sensitivity and the ability to comment on and interpret poetic, narrative, or dramatic texts.
  • Possess powerful tools for language analysis.
  • Have attained a good level of proficiency in the Latin language.

Through a multidisciplinary curriculum, you will develop your communicative and critical analysis skills and be capable of interpreting cultural, literary, and linguistic phenomena of diverse and complex nature, spanning the history of the Western world (from Antiquity to the present) and addressing the challenges of the 21st century.

You appreciate the precision and beauty of both spoken and written language. You are curious to understand the phenomena that explain the functioning of languages. You aspire to deeply analyze literary texts, finding enjoyment in reading them. You have a keen interest in both the French language and literature, as well as Latin Antiquity; you wish to gain a deeper understanding of these two cultural universes and the connections between them, within the history of language and literary tradition. You value clear thinking and rigorous reflection, aiming to acquire strong analytical and argumentative skills. You seek to comprehend contemporary society and its evolution through the lens of its history, languages, and literary productions, aspiring to become a critical and engaged citizen.

Concrete professional opportunities are numerous and span fields such as teaching and research, writing, editing, and the world of books, project management, event organization, corporate communication, journalism, marketing, public and international relations, the non-profit sector, and many more.

Your programme

The Bachelor's program offers you:

  • A general education in humanities (philosophy, history, and art history).
  • Core courses in linguistics and literature, including two classes in English immersion (with pedagogical support).
  • Study of major periods and genres in Latin and French literature, combining literary theory, analysis of works, and extensive knowledge of texts.
  • Reflection on the history of the French language and its various states in the contemporary world, as well as practice in creative writing in French.
  • Effective training in mastering the Latin language through a program of lectures (language and texts) and supervised practical work (translations, extensive reading, grammatical training).
  • Introduction to various aspects of the ancient world through courses in classical studies, ancient history, introduction to the Greek language, and Greek literature.
  • The opportunity to deepen certain aspects of your education (linguistics, medieval and modern studies, ancient Greek) or to explore other disciplines (Egyptology, modern language, philosophy, communication) or societal issues (culture and creation, environmental humanities, gender studies, European studies, decentralized history) through a 20-credit option.
  • The opportunity to engage in research during a final cycle project, with strong methodological guidance.
  • Upon completion of the Bachelor's degree, you can continue your education with the Master's in Ancient and Modern Languages.

Once you've completed your bachelor's degree, you can continue your training with the Master [120] in Ancient and Modern Languages and Literatures or Master [60] in Ancient and Modern Languages and Literatures.
