Starting from very concrete questions (Do we have a duty to work? To vote? To obey unjust laws? To share our wealth?), the book examines the mutual obligations arising from social cooperation from the perspective of moral contractualism. Drawing on G. A. Cohen’s defense of an egalitarian ethos, it engages in a form of political moral philosophy, paying close attention to inequality, the social circumstances in which people act, and institutional solutions that facilitate the fulfilment of our moral duties.
