PhD Scholarship Early-Modern Nominalism

The candidate will write a PhD dissertation under the supervision of Prof. Jacob Schmutz at UCLouvain. The proposed field is: The Reception of Nominalism in the Seventeenth Century, with a subject chose in the domain of logic (e.g. theory of universals or distinctions), theory of perception or knowledge (e.g. ideas and concepts of things), ethics (e.g. the relationship between intellect and will in the explanation of action). Other subjects can be suggested. The study will be conducted in one of the following corpuses, in accordance with the supervisor:
The textual tradition of medieval nominalism in the Seventeenth Century: its presence in the early-modern textbooks of logic and metaphysics
Nominalism among major authors, in particular Descartes, Hobbes and Locke
The specific study of an ‘authentic’ or at least self-described nominalist of the seventeenth century, for instance Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza SJ (Salamanca), André Salabert (France), Obadiah Walker (Oxford), Fulgentius Schautheet OESA (Louvain and Ghent).

The candidate will conduct her/his research at the Centre De Wulf-Mansion of the Institut Supérieur de Philosophie, and will participate in the activities of the Centre.
The dissertation can be written in French or in English.

Prerequisites
MA / MPhil in philosophy, with a clear interest in history of philosophy
A good command of English and ideally Latin
Knowledge of research tools
Skills in digital humanities are particularly welcome

Duration of the project
The initial scholarship is of 24 months, with a possibility of extension. The amount of the scholarship is ca. € 2060,-
Starting date: 1 January 2022, negotiable

Projet sur l’histoire du nominalisme moderne

Le/la candidat(e) rédigera une thèse de doctorat sous la direction du Prof. Jacob Schmutz à l’UCLouvain avec pour champ principal la réception du nominalisme au XVIIe siècle, avec une problématique choisie dans le domaine la logique (ex. : théorie des universaux et des distinctions), la théorie de la perception et de la connaissance (ex. : les idées et les concepts des choses), l’éthique (la relation entre intellect et volonté dans l’analyse de l’action). D’autres suggestions sont possibles.

L’étude sera menée dans l’un ou plusieurs des corpus suivants, en accord avec le promoteur :
    La tradition textuelle du nominalisme médiéval au XVIIe siècle : sa présence dans les cours de logique et de métaphysique
    Le nominalisme chez les grands auteurs de l’âge classique, en particulier Descartes, Hobbes et Locke
    L’étude d’un “nominaliste authentique” du XVIIe siècle, par exemple Pedro Hurtado de Mendoza SJ (Salamanque), André Salabert (France), Obadiah Walker (Oxford), Fulgentius Schautheet OESA (Louvain et Gand)

Le/la candidat(e) fera sa recherche dans le cadre du Centre De Wulf-Mansion à l’Institut Supérieur de Philosophie et participera aux activités du Centre.
La thèse de doctorat pourra être rédigée en langue française ou en langue anglaise.

Prérequis
    Master en philosophie, avec un intérêt démontré en histoire de la philosophie
    Bonne maîtrise de l’anglais et idéalement du latin
    Maîtrise des outils de recherche
    Une compétence en humanités numériques est un plus

Durée du projet
L’engagement initial est de 24 mois, avec possibilité d’extension. La bourse (défiscalisée) proposée est approx. 2060,- € net.
