Laura Merla est docteure en sociologie, licenciée en sciences politiques, et professeure de sociologie de la famille à l'Université catholique de Louvain (Belgique), où elle dirige le Cirfase, un centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur les familles et les sexualités. Ses travaux se déploient au croisement entre la sociologie de la famille, des migrations et des politiques sociales, avec un intérêt particulier pour la transformation des relations familiales et des dynamiques de care dans un contexte de mobilité et de distance géographique. Au travers de méthodologies qualitatives et participatives, elle s'attache à donner la parole à des groupes marginalisés ou invisibilisés, comme les personnes migrantes, les personnes âgées, et les enfants. Parallèlement aux publications scientifiques, elle s'engage fortement dans les débats publics et développe des dispositifs créatifs de vulgarisation scientifique à l'attention des acteurs et actrices de terrain.
Laura est membre de l'Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. Elle est insérée dans de nombreux réseaux internationaux, comme l'Association internationale de Sociologie (ISA) où elle occupe les fonctions de Vice-présidente du RC Migrations et Board member du RC Familles. Elle a effectué un postdoctorat à l'Université de Lisbonne et à l'University of Western Australia, où elle a été Honorary Research Fellow pendant 10 ans.
