Marie Courtoy holds a double Bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Anthropology and in Law (Université Saint-Louis – Bruxelles, Belgium) as well as a Master’s degree in Law (UCLouvain, Belgium). During her Master’s years, she carried out an exchange in Geneva and received two awards for her thesis titled ‘Climate migrants: symptoms of a failing global governance of migration’. Following her studies, she interned at the European Court of Human Rights and at the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (Belgium and Luxembourg Office).
She is currently completing a doctorate at UCLouvain (EDEM-CeDIE) and KU Leuven, under the supervision of Sylvie Sarolea and Marie-Claire Foblets. Her thesis, at the crossroads of law and anthropology, is also part of the “Environmental Rights in Cultural Context” project led by Dirk Hanschel at the Law & Anthropology Department of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology, where she is a research associate.
She is also involved in integrating ecological and social transition issues into the Faculty of Law at UCLouvain, alongside Professors Auriane Lamine and Charles-Hubert Born. They have created a new course on "Law and Sustainability" and are currently compiling a list of courses related to transition issues. They are also bringing together researchers as part of the ‘Law for Transition’ seminar and wish to develop innovative teaching practices in this field.

Contrary to usual practice when studying migration law, her research is not about movements that have already taken place, in a rather palliative way, but explores the role that mobility can play in the face of deteriorating territories. She visited three coastal cities threatened by the sea, in France, Guadeloupe and Senegal, to understand how the authorities and inhabitants imagine their lives on a coastline with an uncertain future.
